Recycling & WEEE

What is WEEE?

WEEE is electrical or electronic equipment that has come to the end of its user life and covers a range of equipment. Items that use electricity, usually connected via a plug, USB or battery, are included in this category.

The Waste Electrical or Electronic Equipment (WEEE) Directive requires countries to maximise separate collection and environmentally friendly processing of these items.

Why Recycle?

Many electrical items can be repaired or recycled, saving natural resources and the environment. If you do not recycle, electrical equipment will end up in landfill where hazardous substances will leak out and cause soil and water contamination – harming wildlife and also human health.

WEEE Symbols

To remind you that old electrical equipment can be recycled, it is now marked with the crossed-out wheeled bin symbol. Please do not throw any electrical equipment (including those marked with this symbol) in your bin.

The 'Crossed out Wheelie Bin' with Bar

All electrical and electronic equipment made after 13 August 2005 should display this symbol on the packaging or the product.

The 'Crossed out Wheelie Bin' with No Bar

This symbol is similar to the one above but does not have a bar at the bottom of the bin. It was used on electrical and electronic equipment made before 13 August 2005.

As part of current UK law all batteries and electrical products should display the ‘Crossed out wheelie bin’ symbol.  The symbol indicates that the product should not be disposed of with normal household waste but taken to a collection site for recycling.

UK Customers

Unwanted electrical equipment is the UK’s fastest growing type of waste.

In the UK, distributors including retailers must provide a system which allows all customers buying new electrical equipment the opportunity to recycle their old items free of charge.

As a responsible retailer, we have met the requirements placed on us by financially supporting the national network of WEEE recycling centres established by Local Authorities. This is achieved through membership of the national Distributor Take-back scheme (DTS). Our DTS registration number is: 700931

We’re proud to support your local authority in providing local recycling facilities for electrical equipment.

Recycling your electrical and electronic devices is easy and free at your local recycling centre! To find your nearest centre, visit the Recycle More website and type in your postcode.

EU Customers

We're currently in the process of setting up EU shipping and part of that is our responsibility under EU and country legislation for the disposal of WEEE and recycling.  We'll update this area when EU shipping opens up to advise our EU customers of our EU WEEE and recycling commitments and responsibilities.
